John Banner

John Banner (January 28, 1910 – January 28, 1973) was an Austrian-born American actor, best known for his role as Sergeant Hans Schultz in the situation comedy Hogan's Heroes (1965–1971).

Banner was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary. He was of Jewish descent and fled Austria after it was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938. He emigrated to the United States, where he began his acting career.

Before Hogan's Heroes, Banner appeared in numerous films and television shows, often playing stereotypical German characters. Some of his pre-Hogan's Heroes appearances include roles in 36 Hours and The Young Lions. However, it was his portrayal of the lovable, bumbling Sergeant Schultz that brought him widespread recognition and cemented his place in television history. Schultz's catchphrase, "I know nothing! I see nothing!," became iconic.

His role in Hogan's%20Heroes presented a challenge and an opportunity for Banner. While the show was controversial for its comedic take on a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II, Banner aimed to portray Schultz as a sympathetic character, more inept than evil. He successfully humanized the role, making Schultz a memorable and beloved figure.

After Hogan's Heroes, Banner continued to work in television, making guest appearances in various shows. He passed away on his 63rd birthday, January 28, 1973, in Vienna, Austria. Despite playing a German character for so long, John%20Banner remained proud of his Jewish heritage and his opposition to the Nazi regime.
